NOTAM basics
- A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is a warning about anything temporary, or issued too late to be charted, that could affect a flight — e.g. navaid outages, runway/lighting closures, temporary danger areas.
- NOTAMs don't amend the AIP, but they can override or supplement what it says (e.g. a temporary change to a permanent danger area's hours).
- Category letter: N = new NOTAM, R = replacing an earlier one, C = cancelling one.
- Standard fields: A) location/FIR, B) start date/time (UTC), C) end date/time (UTC, "EST" = estimated, remains active until cancelled/replaced), E) the free-text NOTAM content in ICAO abbreviations.
- Always check current NOTAMs as part of flight preparation, in addition to charts and the AIP.
