Aerodrome traffic zones & prohibited/restricted/danger areas
Aerodrome Traffic Zone (ATZ)
- Protects traffic near an aerodrome; vertical extent from the surface up to 2000 ft.
- Radius centred on the mid-point of the longest runway: 2 nm if that runway is up to 1850 m long, 2.5 nm if longer (check the AIP for the exact local dimensions).
- Active only during notified hours of watch, and has the same airspace status as the surrounding airspace outside those hours.
- You may not enter an ATZ without permission from the relevant ATS unit — even outside notified hours, there may still be traffic.
Prohibited, restricted & danger areas
- Prohibited area: flight is prohibited within specified limits.
- Restricted area: flight is restricted, subject to specified conditions.
- Danger area: hazardous activity may be occurring — flight through is not itself prohibited, but is inadvisable without checking activity status first.
