Weather Radar RDR-1600

A separate, optional maritime/SAR radar kit — the one with the SR1/SR2/SR3 surface-search modes, beacon detection, and its own tighter ground-transmission distance.

Verified identical between AW169 and AW169 EP. This is a different, alternative radar installation from the RTA-4112 covered in the Weather Radar RTA-4112 note — the two are not fitted together.

What it is

The Telephonics RDR-1600 is a multi-mode surveillance and weather radar built for maritime missions. Hardware: a 12 in flat-plate antenna and drive unit, a receiver/transmitter unit, an interface unit, and a static inverter. ADAHRS 1/2 data are used for antenna stabilization. Controlled through the MFD drop-down menu and the CCD, displayed on the PFDs and/or MFD.

It provides three families of modes: air-to-surface search and detection (SR1/SR2/SR3), weather avoidance (WX/WXA), and beacon detection/navigation (BCN).

Weather and search modes cannot run at the same time, but any of them can be paired with Beacon: WX/BCN, WXA/BCN, SR1/BCN, SR2/BCN, or SR3/BCN. The antenna scans 120° in azimuth by default, selectable down to a 60° sector (SCAN 120 / SCAN 60), with ±15° selectable tilt and a combined ±30° pitch/roll/tilt stabilization system (deselectable via STAB OFF).

The one hard limitation

The radar must not be used for navigation or terrain avoidance — the same restriction as the RTA-4112.

Ground transmission

The weather radar does not transmit on the ground due to the weight-on-wheels (WOW) safety interlock, unless commanded to. Do not turn the radar on within 30 ft (9 m) of personnel or containers holding flammable or explosive material — a wider clearance than the RTA-4112's 17 ft (5 m).

Should the WOW switch fail on the ground, the radar will transmit if it is selected to transmit. The response is to confirm the radar is switched OFF.
